CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 3 Virginia jumped out to an early advantage in doubles and never looked back on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, besting the No. 20 Tar Heels by a 6-1 score. The match propelled the Cavaliers to 15-1 on the season, while Carolina dropped its first ACC match of the season to fall to 7-5 overall.
In doubles play, Virginia first took No. 2 doubles, as Alex Domijan and Julien Uriguen whipped Brennan Boyajian and Esben Hess-Olesen (8-4). The Cavaliers No. 3 doubles duo of Mitchell Frank and Justin Shane then knocked off William Parker and Oystein Steiro (8-3) to seal the doubles point. However, Jose Hernandez and Joey Burkhardt refused to quit at No. 1 doubles, battling to a 8-4 victory over #10-ranked Drew Courtney and Jamere Jenkins.
The Tar Heels unfortunately weren't quite able to sustain the momentum from the No. 1 doubles victory, as Carolina dropped the first five singles matches. At No. 3 singles, Hess-Olesen looked strong early, holding serve twice to take a 2-1 initial lead in the first set. Domijan, however, quickly took control, winning the match 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 1 singles, Jenkins led from the start, knocking off Hernandez 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, at No. 2 singles, Frank bested Boyajian in straight sets (6-2, 6-0). In the bottom half of the singles matches, Carolina seemed to fare better. Despite a hard-fought effort, Shane took down Parker at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-3). Courtney then took down Burkhardt (6-3, 6-3) at No. 4 singles.
Steiro provided the bright spot for the Tar Heels in singles play, outlasting Julien Uriguen at No. 6 singles. Steiro won a streaky match by a score of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2 in order to avoid a singles sweep.
The Tar Heels next square off against Georgia Tech on Friday at 3:00 PM. Admission is free at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
