
Evans Takes First All-Around

Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina senior Morgan Evans took the all-around title in Saturday's meet, as the Tar Heels fell to No. 13 Ohio State 194.475-195.750. UNC honored its five senior gymnasts after the meet in the Heels' final home meet of the season.
Coach Derek Galvin was pleased with the meet and give the seniors a memorable last home stand. "There were a lot of emotions involved in this meet today and I was very proud of the way they competed," he said. "It was a great way for the seniors to go out. It's been a great year at home, we've had great home meets, we've had great crowds. The support from the community has been wonderful and we really appreciate that and hopefully it will continue next year as well."
The Heels were first on vault, scoring a combined 48.850. Evans, fellow senior Zoya Johnson, and sophomore Kristin Aloi led the Heels, each earning a 9.800. The score was a new personal best for Aloi. Seniors Elizabeth Durkac and Taylor Brown both followed with a 9.725 to round out the event.
Next, UNC competed on the uneven bars totaling a 48.425. Evans and Durkac were top scorers for the Heels, tying for third place with 9.750. Sophomores Acacia Cosentino and Emily Cornwell each earned a 9.650 and junior Michelle Ikoma finished with a 9.625.
Carolina scored a 48.650 on the balance beam. Junior Maura Masatsugu was the top scorer for UNC, tying for first overall at a 9.875. Durkac posted a 9.775 and Evans was close behind with a 9.750. Freshman Janell Sargent was given a 9.700 and Johnson completed the apparatus with a 9.550.
The Heels finished on floor exercise, earning a 48.550 total. Evans led her team and tied for first in the competition at 9.850. Aloi was next with 9.825, tying for third place, and Durkac finished at 9.775. Freshman Haley Watts earned a 9.700 and Brown rounded out the day at 9.350.
Evans won the all-around race with a 39.150, and Durkac came in second with a 39.025. Ohio State's Colleen Dean was third at 38.975.
After the competition, UNC honored Taylor Brown, Morgan Evans, Krista Jasper, Zoya Johnson, and Elizabeth Lindley, the team's five seniors in their last home meet of their careers.
Galvin reflected on the group of seniors after the meet. "Each one of them means a tremendous amount to the team. They have been a great group to coach. It's sad that they're graduating, but I'm excited for them. I think they all have very bright futures ahead of them."
UNC travels to defending national champion Alabama Friday, March 16 to round out the regular season.
