BOSTON- Junior Ariel Roberts scored the first points for Carolina as she took second in the women's pentathlon on the first day of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Three other Tar Heels also competed in the men's heptathlon, all three finishing the first half of events in the top seven. The three-day meet is being hosted by Boston College at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.
Roberts scored 3,894 points to repeat as the women's pentathlon runner-up, giving the UNC women eight points in just the first day. Roberts finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.00), second in the high jump (5-8), second in the shot put (37-7 1/4), seventh in the long jump (17-3 1/2) and third in the 800 (2:22.55).
"Ariel competed with a lot of confidence today," assistant head coach Josh Langley said. "We had a game plan going into each of the events, and she executed that well. She represented UNC very well, and are very proud of her finish today."
In the men's heptathlon, freshmen Joe Hutchinson and Kyle Cranston, as well as junior Chadd Pierce competed in the first four of seven events. After the first day, Hutchinson is in second with 2,939 points, Cranston is in third with 2,933 points, and Pierce is in seventh with 2,497 points.
"Joe, Kyle and Chadd all had great days today," Langley said. "Joe is in great position going into the last day, and Chadd really fought back after a disappointing long jump to work his way into scoring position. It's great to see all three guys working together to represent UNC in this event."
Friday's competion continues with the final three events of the men's heptathlon at 11 a.m., while field events start at 12 p.m. and track events at 1:30 p.m. Follow live results throughout the day at FlashResults.org. The meet will also be broadcast live online from 3 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
