Tar Heels Score Early, Shut Out Wildcats

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored four goals in the first 7:51 of play and went on to beat visiting Davidson 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Junior Kelsey Kolojejchick tallied two goals and contributed two assists for the Tar Heels, who improved to 9-1 with their sixth shutout of the year. The Wildcats fell to 4-4.
Just two minutes into the game, Kolojejchick gave the Tar Heels the only goal they would need when she took a pass from senior Elizabeth Stephens and sent it into the left side of the cage. Just 2:16 later, the two combined for another goal. This time, Kolojejchick sent a pass to Stephens, who sprinted to grab the ball on the right baseline then took a shot that went just inside the far post.
In the seventh minute, Kolojejchick sent a pass to freshman Loren Shealy, who shot it in from just in front of the cage for her second goal of the season. The fourth goal came just over a minute later when junior Katie Ardrey dribbled toward the cage from the left baseline and shot the ball past Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher, who made nine saves on the day. Ardrey's goal was her first of the year.
The Tar Heels led 4-0 at halftime, with the fifth goal coming in the 54th minute of play. On a penalty corner, Malmberg shot from the top of the circle and Kolojejchick deflected the ball in from the right side for her team-high 11th goal of the season.
The early lead allowed Carolina to play its bench for long stretches of time, especially welcome after Saturday's double-overtime game, a 1-0 victory over Duke. "A game like yesterday takes a toll on your body, but you have to get used to turning right around and playing the next day because that can happen, especially in postseason play," Kolojejchick said. "It's good that it happened early so we're used to it and we know what to expect. I thought it was great that we started fast because it allowed more people to play."
UNC finished with 25 shots on the day to Davidson's two, both of which came on the same possession and were saved by Carolina goalkeeper Caitlin Powers, who came off the bench in the 16th minute.
Next up for the Tar Heels is an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Friday at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The two played on Sept. 18 in Chapel Hill, with UNC winning 2-1 in overtime.
