No. 1 Carolina Advances With Shutout Of Ohio

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored four goals after halftime to advance in NCAA Tournament play with a 4-0 first round win over No. 20 Ohio Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC, the top seed in the 16-team field, improved to 21-1 with the win and advances to a second round game. The Tar Heels will face eighth-ranked Michigan, a 5-4 winner over No. 9 New Hampshire in the other Chapel Hill first round game, on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Henry Stadium.
"Congratulations to Ohio University," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They lived up to their billing as an outstanding defensive team. They played well and they played their hearts out. They really did a nice job of holding us without a goal in the first half.
"I was proud of our team for showing some composure and not getting frustrated. You hit a hot goalie and I think sometimes you can rush things, but we maintained our composure and were able to control the ball and create chances. I'm delighted about the four goals, and about the shutout as well."
The shutout was UNC's 12th of the season. The Tar Heels now lead the nation in that category.
After a scoreless first half, UNC got on the board quickly in the second half. Senior Katelyn Falgowski sent a pass in from the top of the circle and junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany dove to put it in the cage for the gamewinner in the 38th minute of play. Just over 10 minutes later, Carolina scored again, with freshman Loren Shealy tipping in a ball from classmate Sophie Rudolph to make the score 2-0. A minute later, Rudolph scored on her own, sending in a shot just in front of the cage. The Tar Heels' final goal came on a penalty corner, on a shot by sophomore Marta Malmberg, assisted by seniors Meghan Dawson and Teryn Brill.
Carolina finished with 19 shots to four by Ohio, all of which came late in the second half. The Bobcats had one penalty corner to eight by the Tar Heels.
