HARRISONBURG, Va. - Second-ranked North Carolina didn't manage to score until the 45th minute of play Sunday against host James Madison, but the Tar Heels then added two more goals to come away from the non-conference matchup with a 3-0 win. The shutout was the 11th of the season for Carolina, which improved to 15-1 with the win. The Dukes fell to 6-8.
"We're very pleased to come away from JMU with a 3-0 win," UNC coach Karen Shelton said, "They employed a half-court defense against us and packed everybody in, which made it a frustrating game for us. It took us a half to figure it out."
Senior Elizabeth Stephens had the gamewinner at the 44:16 mark when she put back a rebound after a JMU save. The score sat at 1-0 until the 61st minute, when junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany's shot deflected off the JMU defense and went into the cage. UNC's final goal came just over a minute later, when junior Kelsey Kolojejchick scored off a rebound following a saved shot.
UNC finished with 21 shots and seven corners on the day, which James Madison did not draw a corner and had one shot. JMU goalkeeper Margo Savage made eight saves on the day, and Amy Goldstein added a defensive save. Freshman Sassi Ammer played all 70 minutes in the cage for UNC but did not face a shot on goal.
"I was pleased that they didn't get off a penalty corner or a clean shot on goal," Shelton said. "It's always a good day when you can keep the other team from getting a serious scoring threat."
After a pair of road games, UNC now returns home for its final ACC matchup of the season, on Saturday against No. 3 Maryland. The Tar Heels and the Terrapins met in the NCAA title game in 2009 and 2010, with UNC winning the former and UM the latter. The game, set for 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium, will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
