No. 19 Tar Heels Notch Another ACC Win over Tigers

CHAPEL HILL- The 19th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team scored another ACC victory Friday afternoon, beating #40 Clemson 5-2.
With the win, the Heels move to 15-4 overall and move into a tie for fourth place in the ACC with a 5-2 record. The Tigers drop to 17-6 and 3-5 in the ACC.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys competed and worked hard today," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "We came out really focused in doubles which I think helped us in singles."
In doubles play, the Heels' No. 2 and No. 3 pairings cruised to easy wins to clinch the point. The 17th-ranked pair of Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy finished the Tigers off at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory.
The Tar Heels continued to roll in singles, as #51 Donato continued his fine play at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Derek DiFazio. His doubles partner Hardy then defeated Kevin Galloway at No. 3 by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Wes Moran pulled one back for the Tigers in a defeat of Andrew Crone.
Jose Hernandez, ranked #78 nationally, clinched the match with a victory at No. 2 singles over Clemson's Carlos Alvarez 6-1, 7-6(4).
After the match had been decided, Moritz Dettinger picked up another singles victory for Clemson at No. 6 singles over Zach Hunter, and the Heels' Brennan Boyajian dropped the second set before winning the deciding super tiebreaker 10-7 to take the match.
The Heels face Georgia Tech in their final home match of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
