CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina track and field program is donating all of the backpacks they have received from competition to Haitian earthquake victims, announced Coach Dennis Craddock on Tuesday.
"I am very proud of our teams wanting to do this," says Craddock, "We are happy and excited to help in any way we can."
Assistant coach and director of operations Nadine Faustin-Parker has already spear-headed an effort that resulted in several hundred pounds of donated items in the months since the island's January earthquake. The track team assisted in that effort as well as now adding to it with this generous donation.
The backpacks are the gifts that student-athletes receive from conference competition, the most recent being last weekend's ACC Outdoor Championships.
