CLARION, PA. - The North Carolina wrestling team defeated Cleveland State 40-0 early Saturday for its second consecutive victory, but it could not sustain the momentum as the Tar Heels dropped a 25-19 decision to Clarion in the nightcap of the day's action in Clarion, Pa. With the results, UNC now stands 6-8-1 in dual meets on the season.
Five of Carolina's ten starters were unbeaten on the day, as Jeremy Shaw (133 pounds), Thomas Ferguson (174), Nick Tenpenny (184), Dennis Drury (197) and Ziad Haddad (heavyweight) all registered two victories while the remaining five Tar Heel wrestlers all split their two matches.
Carolina dominated the match versus Cleveland State from start to finish. After Ferguson and Tenpenny earned decisions to give UNC a quick 6-0 lead, Drury and Shaw sandwiched pins around major decision victories by Haddad and 125-pounder Brian Bokoski. Jon Burns gained a technical fall victory late in the match at 149 pounds while Mike Rappo, (141), No. 10 Thomas Scotton (157) and Kyle Kiss (165) all grabbed decisions in the convincing victory.
In the match against Clarion, Carolina jumped out to a 17-0 lead after just four bouts. However, Clarion won five of the final six matches, including one by fall, one by injury default and one by technical fall, to steal the victory. The contest started at 174 pounds where Ferguson dominated Clarion's Steven Cressley 18-2. The match was stopped with only second remaining as Ferguson clinched the technical fall victory. Nick Tenpenny then won by forfeit at 184 pounds to give Carolina a quick 11-0 lead.
UNC kept the momentum on its side when Drury and Haddad both recorded decisions by 5-0 and 8-2 scores, respectively. The tide began to turn at 125 pounds when Clarion's Joe Waltko pinned Brian Bokoski to put the Golden Eagles on the board. Shaw answered with a 6-4 victory over Jay Ivanco to put the Tar Heels ahead 20-6.
Clarion then won the final four bouts to earn the victory. The Golden Eagles were awarded six points when Carolina's Rappo was injured and forced to default at 141 pounds. No. 18 James Fleming followed that up with a 16-1 technical fall victory over Burns. In a matchup between two ranked grapplers at 157, the tenth-ranked Scotton was pinned by No. 17 Hadley Harrison in just 2:17. That put the Golden Eagles up 23-20 going into the final match.
In the finale, Clarion's Nick Milano registered a hard-fought decision over Kyle Kiss by a 5-2 score. During the bout, both teams had a point deducted from their score for bench conduct. That brought the final score to 25-19 in favor of Clarion.
