North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams Opening Statement:
"We're extremely happy to have the win. I really like Lipscomb's team. I think I read that [Lipscomb forward Adnan Hodzik] was the top returning scorer in college basketball, and they've got four shooters out there who can shoot the ball. [UNC sophomore] John Henson made it tough for them inside. I thought our defense in the second half was so much better. In the first half they shot about 35% from the three-point line, and in the second half they were 2-9 and we didn't let them get as many open looks."
"I like to have five guys in double figures. We need to do a better job of not turning the ball over. We still had a stretch in there when we kept turning the ball over in the second half. Our guys lost a little focus--it was an 11 or 12 point game and one of our guys said, `Let's finish them off' and I said, `That's not your attitude. Your attitude should be to play every possession to the best of your ability, and you shouldn't know what the score is.' [UNC freshman] Harrison Barnes looked a little more comfortable out there tonight. [UNC sophomore Tyler] Zeller didn't make a lot of the shots he normally makes, but I think he was effective for us. [UNC sophomore] Leslie [McDonald] may have made the biggest basket of the game. They cut it to three and [McDonald] made a jumper right inside the lane and had made a three right before that. We've got to finish the game better at the end by making our free throws, but all in all it's a win and I do feel good about it."
On playing time:
"We've got a lot of guys who are going to get some time in the game, and we need everybody to do something positive when they do get in. I was not very comfortable in the first half when [UNC senior] Justin Knox and Zeller had two fouls because we're pretty thin up there, but [UNC junior] Justin Watts is doing a great job giving us some minutes as that fourth big guy and really being a great leader for us in practice."
On Henson:
"I think he feels so much more comfortable and confident now and realizes what his game is. He is much more comfortable in what we're asking him to do, and I do believe that started last year with our postseason run."
On Barnes:
"He's got a chance to be a heck of a player. He's a natural scorer, and as the game goes along and as he gets more comfortable out there I think the game will come easier to him."
On player turnover:
"It's hard for us because if you think about it, we've lost 12 players in the last two years. There is some changeover, and we're asking the freshman to step up and do some things they're going to be more comfortable with as the year goes along."
Lipscomb Head Coach Scott Sanderson Open Statement:
"They are extremely long, North Carolina; we knew that. They have great speed and quickness. I thought we did a very good job cutting out their transition baskets by getting back defensively. Their length - it's hard to simulate their length during practice. They blocked I think 10 shots tonight. A lot of those shots for Adnan (Hodzic), our big kid, are baskets in the low post and a lot of them were blocked shots tonight. But I was proud of our team and their effort and the way they battled for 40 minutes. "
