CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Amber Brooks and Kealia Ohai each scored twice as the second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team earned a decisive win over Miami 5-0 Sunday afternoon before 2,383 fans at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels avenged their loss to the Hurricanes last season and improved to 13-1-1 on the season and 5-1 in the ACC. Carolina moved into a first place tie in the league standings with Florida State as both teams now have 15 points.
Ohai had the game-winning goal in the 19th minute of play and added an assist on Carolina's third goal and scored the fifth goal in the 57th minute. Brooks had goals in each half of the contest. Courtney Jones had a goal and assist for Carolina while freshman midfielder Kelly McFarlane added a pair of assists.
Miami (now 9-5-1 and 3-3 in the ACC) had beaten the Tar Heels 1-0 in Coral Gables last year and had limited Carolina to two goals in the last four meetings between the two teams. Carolina had three goals by halftime Sunday. Overall, UNC outshot the Hurricanes 21-7 and scored five goals on seven shots on frame. UNC had the edge in corner kicks 9-0. Vikki Alonzo went the whole way for Miami, making two saves. Carolina used three goalkeepers. Hannah Daly started and played 56:49, making one save and recording an assist on the Tar Heels' first goal. Adelaide Gay came on for 18:21 and Amanda Tucker finished out the last 14:50 of the contest as the three combined to give UNC its fourth successive shutout in ACC play.
North Carolina got the only goal it would end up needing in the 19th minute when Daly sent a long punt from goal that took a big bounce to the foot of Ohai. She pivoted, split her defenders on the dribble and finished into the left side from 12 yards out at 18:15. The Tar Heels padded their lead at 29:16 on a goal off a corner kick. Courtney Jones took the corner from the right side and Kelly McFarlane sent a flick from the near post to Amber Brooks who was unmarked on the far post. Brooks volleyed the ball into the goal for her fourth tally of the year.
Miami had their best chance to score at 35:54 when after a scramble in the box Tara Schwitter ended up with the ball at her foot at the top of the box. With Daly off her line, Schwitter took a shot that hit the right post and bounded across the face of the goal before Daly retrieved it and sent it out of danger.
Less than three minutes later, Carolina got a goal that gave it a three-goal cushion just moments after it appeared it would be a 2-1 game. Ohai sent a cross from the left side back to Courtney Jones who blasted a shot top shelf from the 18-yard line over the outstretched fingers of Alonzo.
Carolina finished off the scoring by getting two more goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Brooks scored at the 50-minute mark on a header in the box, assisted by Rachel Wood. A Tar Heel corner kick was initially cleared out by the Miami defense but it went to Wood who headed it on to Brooks on the left side about five yards out for the putaway.
Almost seven minutes later the final goal came from Ohai, her ninth of the season. McFarlane dribbled into the box on the right side, slipping a pass to Ohai at the 12-yard line. Ohai had her back to the goal but she pivoted and finished into the left side at the 56:47 mark.
The Tar Heels return to action Thursday when they play at Clemson at 7 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field. UNC will have its final regular-season home game of the year next Sunday at 1 p.m. against fourth-ranked Maryland at Fetzer Field.
