ANNAPOLIS, MD. -
The North Carolina wrestling team was defeated 21-15 by the Navy Midshipmen in dual action Saturday afternoon. The loss was the third consecutive defeat for the Tar Heels, which fell to 3-7-1 overall. Navy, which shocked No. 7 Maryland Friday night, improved to 4-1.
Recording wins for the Tar Heels were Nick Tenpenny (184 pounds), Jeremy Shaw (133), Jon Burns (149) and Thomas Ferguson (174). Burns' victory improved his record as a Tar Heel to 2-0, and he was the lone Tar Heel to sweep the weekend's two matches.
The 184-pound bout kicked the match off where Tenpenny earned a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Greg Prioleau to give the Tar Heels an early 3-0 lead. The win broke a three-match losing streak for Tenpenny, who is now 14-11. The lead, however, quickly shifted hands when Navy's Charles Carafano pinned 12th-ranked Dennis Drury at 197 pounds. The loss, combined with Friday's defeat at Virginia, was the first time this season Drury has lost two consecutive bouts.
After Navy earned decisions at heavyweight and 125 pounds, UNC senior Jeremy Shaw recorded a 4-0 victory to narrow the lead to 12-6. The match marked the second time this year the Tar Heel senior has blanked an opponent. He did so previously in a 5-0 win over Edinboro's Ashton Osterberg at the Southern Scuffle. A Navy victory at 141 pounds extended the lead further before Burns registered a 7-5 victory over Midshipman Glenn Shober. Burns' victory brought UNC within six once again, which set the stage for the match's most anticipated match.
At 157 pounds, Carolina's sixth-ranked Thomas Scotton faced off against No. 8 Bryce Saddoris. The two had battled twice at tournaments earlier in the season, with the Tar Heel junior earning 5-3 decisions in both contests. However, Saddoris got the best of Scotton this time, recording a controversial takedown near the edge with just over a minute remaining before riding Scotton out for a 4-1 win. The loss was Scotton's third straight after starting 22-2.
The Midshipmen once again won a close decision at 165 pounds, as Robby Neill logged a 3-1 victory over UNC's Kyle Kiss. Carolina earned a win in the match's final bout when Ferguson was awarded a victory via injury default late in the second period. With the victory, Ferguson inched back to .500 as he is now 8-8.
The Tar Heels will be back in action Saturday in Boone, N.C., at the Appalachian State Open.
