CARY, N.C. - Eighth-seeded North Carolina put up a strong fight Friday morning but fell to top-ranked and undefeated Virginia 4-0 in the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
Coach Sam Paul's youth-laden squad, featuring only one senior and four new starters in both singles and doubles this season, finished its regular season with a solid 16-10 ledger (5-8 ACC) and it will now await word on whether it will earn a 10th straight NCAA Tournament invitation when bids are announced next month. UNC has received an NCAA bid in 16 of 17 seasons from 1992 through 2008, missing only in 1999 when the Tar Heels were 11-14.
