Yellow Jackets Sting Tar Heels In ACC Finale

ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia Tech took an early lead in Sunday afternoon's match against North Carolina and never looked back, winning 7-0 to wrap up the ACC regular season.
The 36th-ranked Tar Heels took one doubles match but were unable to overcome a strong performance in singles by the No. 47 Yellow Jackets in the loss.
Carolina's one bright spot of the day was a 9-8 victory in doubles for Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman, who defeated the top-50 pair of Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith. Donato and Fogleman posted 19 wins at the No. 1 doubles spot during the regular season, and reached 30 wins overall on Sunday for the 2008-09 campaign.
However, the Yellow Jackets won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to take the team point, and kept the momentum going in singles play. Freshmen Brennan Boyajian and Zach Hunter were Carolina's only players to make it past two sets, but both eventually lost to Georgia Tech's Kevin King and Austin Roebuck, respectively.
Both teams were tied for seventh place in the ACC prior to the match with 4-6 conference records, so Georgia Tech's win has implications for this week's upcoming conference tournament in Cary, N.C. In the first round scheduled for Thursday, April 16, the Yellow Jackets will take on 10th-seeded N.C. State at 12 p.m. while the Tar Heels will play 9th-seeded Clemson at 9 a.m. Georgia Tech beat the Wolfpack in late March by the score of 6-1, while UNC beat the Tigers 4-3 on Friday.
