
Tar Heels Drop One At Maryland, 13-8

COLLEGE PARK, MD. -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the fourth-ranked Tar Heels dropped a 13-8 decision to No. 2 Maryland at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park.
With the victory, the Terrapins improved to 14-0 this season, 4-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action, clinching the top seed in the 2009 ACC Tournament. Carolina fell to 11-3 with the defeat, 3-1 in the ACC.
Megan Bosica scored a team-high three goals for UNC while Jenn Russell had two goals and an assist. Kristen Taylor had a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels with Laura Zimmerman and Kristen Carr adding single goals.
The Terps were led by four goals from Karri Ellen Johnson and three from Laura Merrifield. Sarah Mollison had two goals and an assist, Caitlyn McFadden had two goals, Brandi Johnson dished out three assists and Karissa Taylor and Brittany Jones had single goals.
The Tar Heels started well and jumped out to a 5-3 lead with 9:56 left in the first half after an unassisted goal by Taylor followed two goals apiece from Russell and Bosica in the opening 20 minutes of play. Maryland retook the momentum entering halftime, however, scoring the last two goals of the opening period to knot the score at 5-5 at the break.
The Terps scored six of the first seven goals of the second half to grab a commanding, 11-6 lead with 4:27 left in the game. Johnson scored the first goal of the half off a Jones assist to make the score 6-5 Terps just 1:14 into the half. Bosica responded with her third goal to tie the score at 6-6.
Maryland then ripped off five consecutive goals in a span of 14:27 for the 11-6 lead. Each team scored two more goals apiece down the stretch for the final margin of 13-8.
The Tar Heels will close out ACC play at Duke next weekend, while the Terrapins will play at Virginia Tech in their final conference contest of the season. Both teams will take part in the 2009 ACC Tournament in two weeks in Blacksburg, Va.
