Seminoles Defeat Tar Heels 5-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 14 Florida State Seminoles edged 34th-ranked North Carolina 5-2 on Sunday afternoon, denying the Tar Heels in their second late-match comeback attempt of the weekend.
Carolina nearly defeated No. 45 Miami on Friday after falling behind 3-0, but dropped the last match decided in a 4-3 loss.
The Tar Heels played their higher-ranked opponents close in doubles, but ultimately lost the team point. Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman fell behind 6-1 at the No. 1 spot but came back to tie it at 7-7, only to lose the next two games to decide the match. Brennan Boyajian and Zach Hunter reached a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot but lost 7-5 to deliver the team lead to Florida State. Andrew Crone and Alex Rafiee saved North Carolina from a doubles sweep by winning 8-4 at the No. 2 spot.
UNC got off to a quick start in singles behind the brilliant play of senior captain Fogleman. In a matchup of two top-60 singles players, the senior from Louisiana cruised past Florida State's Clint Bowles 6-1, 6-1. The reigning ACC Player of the Week defeated another ranked player, Miami's Christian Blocker, by the score of 7-5, 6-3 on Friday.
After Fogleman's win, the Seminoles recorded two quick wins at the third and fourth singles spots to extend their lead to 3-1. Luke Mojica put the finishing touches on a three-set comeback win to give the Tar Heels their second team point, but Zach Hunter couldn't hold off Drew Bailey in the third set and the match was decided.
The Tar Heels will host the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, March 27 in their fourth ACC contest. The match will be played at 2:30 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
