CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 7 Maryland defeated North Carolina by a 41-0 margin Friday in the Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling opener for both teams at Fetzer Gymnasium. The Tar Heels dropped to 2-4-1 and 0-1-0 in the ACC with the loss, while the Terrapins improved to 6-1 and 1-0 in league action.
Maryland, which features five nationally-ranked individuals in its lineup, recorded one pin, one forfeit, one technical fall and three major decisions en route to the victory.
UNC junior 157-pounder Thomas Scotton, who entered the match with an 11-0 mark, suffered his first loss. Fellow nationally-ranked Tar Heels Nick Stabile, who is No. 12 at 149 pounds, and Dennis Drury, who is No. 11 at 197, also suffered defeats on the night.
The Tar Heels are back in action Dec. 20 at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
