UNC falls to VCU at ITA Team Indoors Qualifying
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 19 North Carolina lost a tough battle to No. 38 VCU at the ITA National Team Indoors Qualifying Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The No. 5 ranked doubles team of Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman played long and hard at the No. 1 position. Eight deuces were played in their 12th game as UNC broke serve to win the match by defeating their opponents Benjamin Bouhana and Emil Lindgren 8-4. Donato, ranked No. 73 in singles, defeated his opponent 7-6(4), 6-4 in the No. 1 position. Fogleman, ranked No. 59 in singles, also captured a win at the No. 2 position with a 6-4, 6-3 score.
The doubles team of Andrew Crone and Zach Hunter came from behind to even the score with their opponents, yet dropped a hard fought battle at the No. 2 position losing 9-8(6). Similarly, Brennan Boyajian and Alex Rafiee failed to capture a win at number three doubles with a final score of 7-9.
Boyajian did not finish his split sets and Crone, Luke Mojica, and Hunter were unable to capture victories against their VCU opponents.
Earlier in the day, No. 14 Michigan defeated No. 25 California to move on in the qualifying.
Although the Tar Heels will not be advancing to the ITA Team Indoors Tournament, the team plays No. 25 California tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center to finish out the weekend.
