CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team scored twice in the second half Saturday afternoon to erase a one-goal halftime deficit and beat ninth-ranked Duke 2-1 at Williams Field. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 7-2 on the season and opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with a win. Duke fell to 6-3 overall, 0-2 in ACC play.
The game kicked off competition for the 2008-09 Carlyle Cup, with Carolina taking a 1-0 lead based on the field hockey victory.
"I think it's a valuable win in that we had to come from behind," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We showed some heart. I tried to inspire them at halftime to play for the name on the front of their jersey. We knew we didn't play well in the first half, we knew Duke had outplayed us and deserved the goal lead, but it was up to us to turn it around and we did in a collective manner.
"We started the game very well, then Duke started to get on a roll. Credit them - I thought it was a hard-fought victory for us."
Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 14:11 mark on an unassisted goal by Amie Survilla, whose shot from the right side of the circle got past UNC junior Brianna O'Donnell, who started in the cage. The Blue Devils held onto the lead through the rest of the half and the first 12 minutes of the second period.
With 22:41 remaining on the clock, senior captain Britt van Beek tied the score for UNC on a long shot from the left side of the circle. Following a Tar Heel penalty corner shot and Blue Devil save, she gathered the ball and sent it back past Duke keeper Ali Comoli to even the score at 1-1.
The Carolina gamewinner came on a penalty corner with just under eight minutes to play. UNC junior Danielle Forword sent a shot from the left side past Comoli, who finished the day with five saves. Senior Kate Scholl and sophomore Katelyn Falgowski assisted on the play for the Tar Heels.
Duke finished the game with 12 shots to 11 by UNC, but the Tar Heels led in penalty corners 5-4. UNC finished with four saves, all by sophomore Jackie Kintzer in the second half.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. game at Longwood in Farmville, Va. UNC's next home game is an ACC battle with Wake Forest next Saturday at Henry Stadium. Game time has been set for noon.
