CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seniors Kate Scholl and Britt van Beek were among six Tar Heels to score goals Sunday as the North Carolina field hockey team celebrated Senior Day with a 9-0 win over Davidson at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Sixth-ranked UNC improved to 14-4 with a win in its final game of the regular season. The visiting Wildcats dropped to 6-13.
"I'm very proud of our group," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I think we honored the seniors today by playing so well. I was particularly pleased with all the scoring from different people. I feel like we made progress in every phase of our game - the things we worked on in practice last week, the things we talked about following yesterday's win at Old Dominion, we applied in today's game. It was nice to end the (regular) season at home and have the Fever and the band in attendance to support and honor the seniors."
The game began with a ceremony to honor Scholl, from East Greenville, Pa., and van Beek, from Den Bosch, the Netherlands. Van Beek scored the gamewinner six minutes into the action, putting back a rebound after Davidson goalkeeper Christa Goeke had made three quick saves on a series of Tar Heel shots.
Three minutes later, van Beek assisted on the goal that put UNC up 2-0, sending a pass from the right of the cage to junior Illse Davids, who scored her eighth goal of the year. Davids had her ninth three minutes later, scoring on the rebound after the save of a shot by redshirt freshman Teryn Brill.
Scholl got into the scoring action with eight minutes to play before halftime, taking a pass from sophomore Jen Slocum and putting in her third goal of the season to give UNC a 4-0 lead at the break.
Less than three minutes into the second half, sophomore Katelyn Falgowski scored her third goal of the season. After Goeke saved the initial shot on a UNC penalty corner, Falgowski grabbed the rebound and put it back to boost Carolina's lead to 5-0.
Freshman Taryn Gjurich scored goal number six, bringing the ball upfield and shooting from the top of the circle for her second goal of the year.
Scholl scored her second of the game at the 54:41 mark, putting back the rebound after a save on a penalty corner. Just over a minute later, Slocum drove in from the left and put the ball into the right side of the cage past a sliding Goeke.
The final goal came from Falgowski, who scored on a rebound after a penalty corner shot that was saved by Davidson keeper Brittany Rollek, who played the game's final eight minutes in goal.
On the day, UNC had 32 shots to one by Davidson and 12 corners, eight of them in the second half. Carolina goalkeepers Jackie Kintzer and Brianna O'Donnell split the game in goal as the Tar Heels picked up their seventh shutout of the season.
Next up for North Carolina is the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, set for Nov. 6, 7 and 9 at Duke. The tournament bracket will be announced on Monday.
