DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. -
The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a nine-over-par 297 and is tied for second place after the opening round of the NCAA Championship at LPGA International, Legends Course. The Tar Heels are just two stokes behind first-round leader Southern California which shot 295.
"I was pleased with our play today," said Carolina head coach Sally Austin. "I think we played well. We played steady and played with confidence."
The Tar Heels are continuing their splendid play from the final round of the NCAA East Regional in Baton Rouge, La., when they broke the school record for a single round with an eight-under 280 total to jump from 11th to fifth place and qualify for this week's NCAA Championship. And in the first round this week, the 18-ranked Tar Heels have responded with strong steady play.
Three Tar Heels fired a two-over 74 in Tuesday's opening round and are tied for 13th place - sophomore Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., sophomore Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., and freshman Kate Thomas, from Bathurst, Australia. Katie Miller, a senior from Jeannette, Pa., carded a three-over 75 and is tied for 22nd while Ann Laney, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., posted a six-over 78 and is tied for 72nd.
This is Carolina's 10th appearance in the NCAA Championship and the Tar Heels' highest finish is eighth place on four different occasions. Austin has taken six teams to the NCAA Championship with her highest finish being eighth place in 1995.
In the team race, Louisville is tied with the Tar Heels for second place. Stanford is two shots back in fourth place with a 299 total while Duke is fifth at 300 and Denver is sixth at 302. Five teams are tied for seventh place with 303 totals - UCLA, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Purdue and UC Irvine.
