Geujman's Tiebreaker Win Keeps UNC Unbeaten

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - North Carolina senior Sebastian Guejman saved three match points at No. 3 singles Monday afternoon to win the deciding match in No. 11-ranked North Carolina's 4-3 victory over the University of San Diego, which was ranked 72nd. The win was UNC's 31st successive triumph in a non-conference regular-season match and the second straight year the Tar Heels have beaten the Toreros on the West Coast.
It was also a homecoming match for a pair of Tar Heel freshmen -- Stefan Hardy and Chris Kearney -- who are natives of Southern California. Both freshmen won in singles to help propel Coach Sam Paul's team to the victory. UNC improved to 11-0 with the win while USD fell to 4-7.
The Tar Heels went ahead in the match by winning the doubles match, taking two of the three contests. Hardy and Guejman combined to win at No. 2 doubles while Taylor Fogleman teamed with Kearney to produce a win at the No. 3 slot.
With the Heels up 1-0, UNC needed a 3-3 split in the singles to earn the victory.
Both Hardy of Santa Maria, Calif. and Kearney of Irvine, Calif. won their matches in straight sets. Hardy beat Chris Coettzee 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Kearney downed Ryo Sekiguchi 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. The Toreros won at No. 1 and No. 5 singles which brought the match decision to the No. 3 and No. 6 courts which both played to third set tiebreakers.
Taylor Fogleman at No. 6 fell in his third set but Geujman, UNC's only senior, came through at No. 3. He saved three match points in the third set before winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
UNC returns to action Saturday when the Heels play at San Diego State to wind up their California road trip.
