College Park, Md. ------ The University of North Carolina gymnastics team could not overcome a poor routine on floor exercise and loss at Maryland, 194.025-193.750.
"It was senior night at Maryland, and we made their night," said Carolina head coach Derek Galvin. "We had some good routines, but our performance on floor really hurt. We did not get the score we were hoping for, but it's not anything we can't correct. We have to rebound for next week's meet at New Hampshire."
The Tar Heels did receive some outstanding performances from several competitors. Starting on bars, Carolina's Shawna Kelly turned in a 9.775 to capture the individual title, while Christine Nguyen had a 9.725 to finish in a tie for third.
Moving to the vault, the Tar Heels were led by excellent efforts by Christine Robella and Kara Wright who tied for individual honors with Maryland's Angela Ferg at 9.825.
Carolina was in contention until advancing to the floor exercise, normally one of the team's strong points. Carolina was forced to count two falls during the event and scored just a 47.850. Despite the low team score, Rachel Schneider posted her best performance of the season with a 9.750 to finish second.
The Tar Heels rebounded strong on their final rotation of the night on balance beam. Led by Tina Jacob, Nguyen and Robella, Carolina scored a 48.625 to narrow the final margin. Nguyen won the beam competition with a 9.875 performance, while Robella scored a 9.825 to tie for second and Jacob recorded a 9.80 for fifth.
"I would proud of the way our team responded on balance beam," said Galvin. "We refocused and had some exceptional routines."
Wright, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., finished second in the all-around with a score of 38.775.
Carolina will look to snap a two-meet losing streak next week when it heads to New Hampshire on March 16.
