Carolina Takes Two From Charlotte And Gardner-Webb
February 3, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Carolina (2-0) took the doubles point against Charlotte dropping only seven games total. The three seed of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney came off first with a straight 8-0 victory over Felix Bernhoerster and Brad Clinard. The two and three seeds finished within two minutes of each other with two clinching the doubles point. The duo of Sebastian Guejman and Stefan Hardy ousted Dorian Host and Roy Sichel, 8-4, while the one seed tandem of Lenny Gullan and David Stone defeated Ryan Johnson and Darren Mansell, 8-5.
The first two off the court again in singles were sophomore Taylor Fogleman and freshman Chris Kearney. Fogleman dropped only two games at the five seed in downing Brad Clinard, 6-1, 6-1, to give Carolina a 2-0 lead. Kearney, making his Tar Heel debut, dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat over Ryan Johnson at the three seed. Fellow freshman, Stefan Hardy, competing at the two seed, clinched the Charlotte victory with a 6-0, 6-2 over Darren Mansell. Karl Wishart and Will Plyler each dropped only two games in their victories over Felix Bernhoerster and Aljoscha Jelinek, respectively. Tough competition ensued at the one spot as 25th ranked Benjamin Carlotti fell to 39th ranked Roy Sichel, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Chris Kearney was pleased with his first outing as a Tar Heel, but saw some rough spots. "The matches went well," said Kearney. "Overall, I think I played pretty good. I still have a lot to work on, but overall, I think it was pretty good."
Similar action took place in the afternoon against Gardner-Webb. The Tar Heels switched it up a little in doubles. Gullan and Stone competed at the one seed ousting Roberto Vasques and Taylor Ferrier in an 8-2 contest. Kearney and Hardy teamed up in good fashion to down Gabe Veiga and Eugeny Slesarev, 8-2, at the two spot. Tristan Heinrich stepped in with Taylor Fogleman at the three seed to take on Kim Ellis and Grant Van Rensburg. The Tar Heel duo defeated the Bulldog pair, 8-3.
Finishing first for the second time of the day in singles, Fogleman easily cruised past Taylor Ferrier, 6-4, 6-1, at the five seed. Kearney moved up to the two seed and finished second again as he downed Eugency Slesarev, 6-4, 6-2. The one seed, No. 25 Carlotti, clinched the match with straight 6-2 sets over Kim Ellis. Wishart dropped three sets to Grant Van Rensburg in a 6-2, 6-1 feat at the six seed. The four and three seeds saw a little tougher competition as Plyler and Hardy each went into tie-breaks before defeating Gabe Veiga and Roberto Vasques, respectively.
Head coach Sam Paul was pleased with the team's first appearances, but sees improvement in the future. "Play was good in some spots, not so good in other spots," said Paul. "We have a long way to go, but we learned a lot today. The team has to get better. We have work to do."
Charlotte now drops to 6-2, while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-2. These two matches for Carolina were the first two in a set of six dual matches in seven days. Carolina resumes play Tuesday with a double header against Howard at 2 p.m. and Campbell at 7 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
