Richmond, Va. - Freshmen Stefan Hardy and Chris Kearney helped lead the No. 21 North Carolina men's tennis team to a 4-2 upset over No. 17 VCU Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va. Lone senior Sebastian Guejman clinched the match at the four spot in a third-set tiebreaker. Sunday's win marks the third straight year North Carolina has upset a higher ranked VCU team and the 32nd straight non-conference regular season win, dating back to February 5, 2005, for the Tar Heels. North Carolina moves to a perfect 8-0 record, while VCU falls to 10-4 with the loss.
North Carolina won the doubles point with two 8-6 victories at the one and three seeds. The 56th-ranked Tar Heel duo of Lenny Gullan and David Stone won at No. 1 over Petr Olsak and Alex Israel, while Chris Kearney and Taylor Fogleman won at the three spot to clinch the doubles point against Sergi Arumi and Sebatien Deridder.
Kearney, a native of Irvine, Calif., moved the score to a 2-0 North Carolina lead with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 win over Sergi Arumi at No. 3. VCU pulled the score to 2-1 as Petr Oslak defeated No. 31 Benjamin Carlotti at the one spot, 6-3, 6-4. Stefan Hardy, who hails from Santa Maria, Calif., prevailed at No. 2 over Emil Lindgren in the third set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, to extend North Carolina's lead to 3-1. VCU gained their second point as Taylor Fogleman fell to Damien Lacombe at the six spot, 6-1, 6-3. With the score standing at 3-2, the ultimate decision was decided at the four spot as senior Sebastian Guejman needed a third-set tiebreaker to close out the match, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5), over Sebatien Deridder.
Head coach Sam Paul was extremely pleased with the team's effort on the road. "It was a great college match," said Paul. "I'm very proud of guys. It took tremendous effort and showed tremendous heart. It was a great win on the road."
This VCU loss marks only the 18th home loss for VCU head coach Paul Kostin in his 17 years. North Carolina returns home for a doubleheader Sunday, March 4 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The matches are slated for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. starts against Navy and James Madison.
