CHAPEL HILL --- For the second time in two weeks the No. 23 NC State Wolfpack swept a doubleheader from No. 22 North Carolina, 2-1 and 2-0, Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Anderson Stadium. With the two losses, the second-seeded Tar Heels (48-17) are eliminated, while the top-seeded Wolfpack (48-19) will meet either fourth-seeded Georgia Tech or fifth-seeded Florida State in the title game.
Lisa Norris (13-6) and Crystal Cox (27-8) took losses in the circle for UNC, while Abbie Sims (23-12) and Shaina Ervin (18-3) picked up wins for NC State. The Wolfpack now owns an 8-2 all-time record against Carolina.
NC State hit solo home runs in the first inning of each contest, with Heather Gelbard and Shanna Smith delivering the long balls. Sims delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score the game-winning run in the early game.
Jennifer Jacobs had both of Carolina's hits in the game two loss, a fourth-inning double to right and a seventh-inning double to the gap in left center.
Carolina will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket Sunday afternoon at 3:30 on ESPNEWS.
