CHAPEL HILL --- No. 22 North Carolina scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning as the second-seeded Tar Heels (48-15) topped sixth-seeded Virginia, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Anderson Stadium. Crystal Cox established a new single-season school record for wins, as the Tar Heels reached 48 victories for the first time in school history.
Breanna Brown led off the game with an infield single, and Virginia starter Erin Horn (13-11) loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back walks. Jacobs, Thursday night's hero, then lifted an 0-1 pitch to center for a sacrifice fly. That would prove to be the game-winner, as Cox (27-7) dominated the Cavaliers (29-25).
UVa's best chance came in the fifth, when singles by Michelle Salmiery and Jessica Taylor put runners on the corners with two outs. But Cox got Elea Crockett to fly out to left to end the threat. The Harrisburg, N.C., senior ended the game with her ninth strikeout of the day to move Carolina into the semifinals.
Cox, who already owns the school record for wins in a career, surpassed Radara McHugh's mark of 26 set in 1999.
The Tar Heels reached 48 wins for the first time in program history, eclipsing the 47-17 record of the 2001 squad.
UNC will now face either No. 1 NC State, No. 3 Virginia Tech or No. 5 Florida State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
