OCA RATON, Fla. --- No. 25 North Carolina claimed third place at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament with a 5-1 win over Connecticut Sunday afternoon. Junior shortstop Anna Evans and sophomore designated player Casey Testa each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Tar Heel offense. Freshman Lisa Norris allowed just two hits over five innings to get the win in the circle.
Carolina (24-9) opened up an early lead with two runs in the first and one in the second. Sophomore left fielder Ashley Oxendine reached on a one-out error in the first and scored on a Jennifer Jacobs single. Pinch-runner Erin Dudley would later score on Evans' infield single. Sophomore catcher Whitney Gelin started the second with a leadoff walk and scored on Testa's single.
The Tar Heels would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth to put the game away. Gelin led off with a double to left and took third on a wild pitch. Junior right fielder Marissa May then hit a soft grounder in front of the plate that scored Gelin. May would later score when, after stealing third, she took home on a UConn error.
Norris (9-3) was solid throughout, allowing just an unearned run in the fifth. Fellow freshman Amber Johnson retired six of seven batters over the final two innings to secure the win.
