Tar Heels Remain Undefeated With 5-2 Victory At San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Thirteenth-ranked North Carolina remained undefeated with a 5-2 victory over No. 23 San Diego Monday afternoon. Senior Raian Luchici clinched the victory for the Tar Heels with a win over 45th-rated Pierrick Ysern at No. 1 singles.
David Stone and Lenny Gullan provided the clinching victory in doubles for the Tar Heels by an 8-6 score at the No. 2 spot. UNC also won at No. 3 doubles while dropping the match at No. 1.
Windy conditions caused Carolina some early difficulties in singles. The Toreros won four first sets and evened the match 1-1 with a straight set win at number the No. 3 slot.
However, senior Brad Pomeroy put the Tar Heels ahead again with a 7-6(11-9), 6-2 victory over Oscar Plotnik at number two singles.
San Diego tied the match at 2-2 shortly before sophomore Will Plyler captured a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles. That match featured many long baseline rallies.
Senior Raian Luchici avenged a loss to USD's Pierrick Ysern in the first round of last year's NCAA Singles Championship with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 match-clinching victory for the Tar Heels. After defeating Luchici last year, Ysern advanced to the NCAA singles final.
Benjamin Carlotti rallied from a set down to win at No. 4 singles and make the final score 5-2.
The Tar Heels, now 14-0, continue their two-match spring break road swing facing the San Diego State Aztecs on Wednesday at 3 p.m. EST.
