CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky extended his unbeaten streak to 19 bouts with a pin and a technical fall, but North Carolina managed just two more individual wins Saturday and dropped matches to No. 25 Penn, 33-8, and The Citadel, 33-9, at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels, who tied NC State Friday, are now 12-5-1 on the season, after an 0-2-1 weekend at home.
Now 33-2 on the season, Nadolsky opened his afternoon with a 19-2 technical fall victory over Penn's Jack Sullivan for his 18th straight victory. He had five takedowns in the bout, including four in the third period and added a point for riding time for the 17-point margin. Against the Bulldogs, Nadolsky wasted little time notching his second win of the day, a pin of John Buck in just 1:32.
The Holland, Mich., native has not lost since the Nov. 26 Carolina Open, and his pin of Buck was his 11th of the season, just one shy of ninth on the Tar Heels' single-season list. With his two victories Saturday, Nadolsky accounted for 11 of the Carolina's 17 total points.
The Tar Heels' only other victories on the day came from junior Deon Barrett at 165 pounds versus Penn, and junior Brian Baglio at 157 against The Citadel. Barrett, who improved to 13-8 on the season with the win, scored a pair of early takedowns and held on for a 7-4 victory over the Quakers' Jeff Zannetti. In the second match of the afternoon, Baglio notched a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs' Chris Humphries thanks to a third-period takedown.
In the Tar Heels' first match of day, Penn won eight of the first nine bouts, including three via major decision before Barrett captured Carolina's second victory of the match. In the second match, The Citadel reeled off wins in seven of the first eight bouts before Baglio's win snapped the Bulldogs' streak.
Injuries also took their toll on the Tar Heels Saturday, as they gave up a combined 18 points on a pair of injury defaults and one medical forfeit.
Penn, which lost just two bouts all afternoon, blanked The Citadel, 43-0, in the first match of the day.
The Tar Heels return to action on the road next weekend at Virginia, Maryland and Navy.
