Tar Heels' Winning Streak Snapped At Four

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated North Carolina, 6-1, in a hard fought match which began outdoors Friday afternoon and was completed indoors over five hours later. No. 28 Wake Forest improves their record to 13-5 (5-3 ACC), while the Tar Heels drops to 14-6 (4-3 ACC).
Wake Forest began the match sweeping all three doubles matches. Brett Ross and Derrick Spice defeated the No. 41 doubles team in the nation, Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy, 8-6. After trailing the Tar Heels, 5-1 at the No. 2 spot, Todd Paul and Joe Bates rallied to clinch the point, 9-7.
Singles play began outdoors, but was halted after 20 minutes. Thirty minutes later, the match resumed indoors. Every singles match was tightly contested. After two hours, Wake finally earned a their first singles point as No. 80 Derrick Spice defeated No. 72 Luchici in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(5). At number two singles Brad Pomeroy rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to win a tiebreak and force Wake's Todd Paul to a third set. Andrew Hamar finally clinched the win with a straight set 6-4, 7-6 win over Geoff Boyd, which took longer than the three set affair on the adjoining second court. The Boyd-Hamar match-up featured long baseline rallies and was decided by a single service break at 4-3 in the first set.
The last three singles matches on court were all extended to three sets. Ross defeated Derek Porter of UNC, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, at the number six singles position, Marius Adamanski outlastedSebastian Guejman, 7-6(3), 6-7(9), 1-0(12-10 TB). Senior Jonathan Janda defeated Wake's Liron Strauss, 7-6(2), 5-7, 1-0(12-10 TB) to complete the team match, nearly five hours after it began.
Carolina returns home to face 3rd ranked Virginia this Sunday at 12 NOON. Sunday is Carolina's next to last home match. Virginia is 19-2 overall and 6-0 in the ACC.
