RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina won the doubles point and the first three singles matches in straight sets to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead over N.C. State. The Wolfpack won the final three matches on court to make the final margin 4-3.
The two teams split number two and three doubles. Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy broke State at 7-7 and served for the doubles point at 8-7. After the Wolfpack fought off four match points, Boyd clinched the doubles point on his serve.
Carolina continued the momentum in singles, winning four first sets. Raian Luchici led the way going up 4-1 on State's Conor Taylor at number one singles. Luchici then won eight straight games to put the Tar Heels up 2-0.
Freshman Benjamin Carlotti won several long baseline rallies, with impressive speed and hustle to beat State's Val Banada. Senior Geoff Boyd again came through in the clutch to put the Tar Heels up 4-0.
The number six singles match between Shelby, N.C. natives Jonathan Janda and William Noblitt did not begin until after Luchici's victory because of water damage on one court.
The win evened Carolina's conference record at 2-2 prior to a road match against Miami on Easter Sunday.
