DURHAM, N.C. - After falling to Duke for the first time since the 1972-73 season a year ago, the North Carolina wrestling team (4-5, 3-1 ACC) jumped out to an 18-0 lead and held on for a 28-10 victory over the rival Blue Devils (5-3, 1-2 ACC) Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Tar Heels, who have won 31 of the last 32 meetings with Duke, picked up a pin from junior All-America Evan Sola and three major decisions in the first four bouts of the match.
At 133, Duke's Bryan Gibson scored first with an early takedown of Sola, but he quickly responded and took control of the match, carrying a 3-2 lead into the second period. Sola kept the pressure on Gibson and eventually recorded his team-best eighth pin of the season at the 4:31 mark. He is 22-3 on the season, 9-0 in duals and 4-0 in the ACC.
Sophomore Bobby Shaw got the match started with a 9-1 win over the Blue Devils' Kellan McKeon, and freshmen Isaiah Britton and Chris Ramos followed Sola's pin with major decisions at 141 and 149, respectively. Britton topped Wes Kuser, 13-3, and Ramos scored 10 unanswered points for a 10-2 win over Antwone Floyd and an 18-0 Tar Heel lead. Shaw is now 19-12 on the year and 8-1 in duals, while Britton improves to 21-10 and Ramos to 12-8.
Philip Wightman finally got Duke on the board at 157 with a 15-6 major decision over UNC's Greg Carr, who was wrestling his first dual of the season. However, the Tar Heels quickly got back those points with a 10-2 major decision by Garrett Atkinson over Steve Smith at 165.
Trailing 22-4, the Blue Devils cut into the Carolina lead with decisions at 174 by Levi Craig and 184 by Frank Cornely.
Sophomore David Dashiell got the Tar Heels back in the win column with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Mark Thompson at 197. Dashiell, now 18-11 this season, picked up a takedown with under a minute remaining in the third period to secure the decision.
Sophomore heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky closed out the match with a 2-1 victory over former Tar Heel and current Duke law student Venroy July. Nadolsky is now 23-11 and 7-2 in duals.
With the win, Carolina picked up a point towards the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils. UNC now holds an 8.5-3.5 lead for the 2004-05 academic year. The Tar Heels return to action Saturday against Drexel and No. 25 Penn in Philadelphia.
