
No. 18 North Carolina Men's Tennis Opens Season With 7-0 Win Over Davidson

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina 18th-ranked men's tennis team opened its 2005 dual match season with a 7-0 shutout victory over Davidson Saturday morning at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The indoor match was the first in a doubleheader for the Tar Heels on Saturday. Carolina will also play host to North Carolina A&T at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The match was the season opener for both the Tar Heels and the Wildcats.
Carolina's six singles victories all came in straight sets and they included the dual match debuts of two Tar Heel players - freshman Benjamin Carlotti of Paris, France at No. 3 singles and freshman David Stone of Greensboro, N.C. at No. 5 singles.
Junior Raian Luchici, an All-ACC selection for the Tar Heels in 2004, led the way for the Tar Heels in the match as he won at No. 1 singles over Donald Miles of the Wildcats, 6-1, 6-1. Luchici is currently ranked No. 65 in the nation in singles on the collegiate level. Junior Brad Pomeroy was victorious at the No. 2 spot over Flavia Simihaian, 6-3, 6-3 and other UNC veterans - junior Derek Porter at No. 4 singles and senior Jonathan Janda at No. 6 singles also easily won their singles matches.
The two Tar Heels making their singles debuts were Carlotti and Stone. Carlotti, who transferred to Carolina from Ole Miss but retains status as a true freshman, defeated John Bolton of Davidson 6-3, 6-4. Stone triumphed over Russ Burns 6-2, 6-3.
UNC also swept all three doubles matches easily with four UNC first-year players - Stone, Will Plyler (Raleigh, N.C.), Sebastien Guejman (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Aly Mandour (Cairo, Egypt) - in the Tar Heel lineup.
