Bove, Price Lead UNC to Doubleheader Sweep of Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. - The North Carolina softball team started its ACC season off on a winning note, as they swept Virginia 3-1, 7-2 to kick off conference play. Emily Price broke open a 1-1 tie in game one by hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning and then broke open a 2-2 tie in game two by hitting a RBI single in the seventh inning. Julia Bove went a combined 4-7 with four RBI's in the two games to help lead UNC to the sweep.
Carolina improves to 2-0 in the ACC and 32-14 overall, while Virginia falls to 0-2 in the ACC and 25-20 overall. The Tar Heels have won 16 of their last 17 games.
In game one, Bove went 2-3 with a RBI and Price went 1-3 with a home run. Dionne Streete went 2-2 with two walks from the leadoff spot to also help UNC to victory.
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers both didn't score until the fifth inning as Carolina's Crystal Cox pitched four shutout innings to start the game off. UNC's first run came in the fifth inning as pinch runner Marissa May scored with the bases loaded on a Streete walk. Virginia tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning to mke it 1-1.
Carolina moved ahead in the sixth inning when Price led the inning off with a solo home run. Bove added an insurance run with a RBI single driving in Michelle Hoffmann. Cox finished the Cavaliers off as she didn't allow a run in the final two innings.
Cox pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks. She struck out six batters on the day and improved to 17-8 on the season.
In the 7-2 win in game two, Price and Bove led the way once again as Price went 3-4 with two runs and a RBI and Bove went 2-4 with 3 RBI's. Alison Yin pitched a complete game for the Tar Heels allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk.
UNC fell behind 2-0 early, as the Cavaliers scored a run in both the first and second innings. The Tar Heels came back to tie the game at two in the third inning. Jessica Young singled with one out and Price followed with a single to right-center. Pinch runner Marissa May scored on a Jessica Graziano sacrifice bunt and then Price scored on a Bove single to centerfield.
UNC didn't score again until the seventh inning, but they knocked five runs across the plate to put the game away. Price started the scoring off with a bases loaded single soring Streete and Natashalyn Snipes. Bove then hit a bases loaded single two batters later scoring pinch-runner Erin Dudley and Price. Theresa Nicholas ended the scoring as she hit a RBI sacrifice fly scoring Graziano to make it 7-2.
Yin improved to 12-6 with the win. The Tar Heels next host N.C. State on Friday, April 9 at the UNC Softball Complex.
