UNC Advance to Quarterfinals of Buzz Classic, Then Fall to Nicholls State

Marietta, Ga. - The North Carolina softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2004 Buzz Classic, before falling to Nicholls State 5-0. North Carolina won all three of its games on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals. UNC defeated Middle Tennessee State 10-9, Troy State 5-4 in nine innings and then beat Western Kentucky 5-1. Jessica Young powered the Tar Heels in the win over Middle Tennessee State as she went 3-4 with four RBI's and a home run. Natashalyn Snipes hit the game-winning single as she knocked in Joslin Higgins to break the 9-9 tie.
The Tar Heels scored two runs in the ninth inning to overcome Troy State in the second game of the day as UNC won 5-4. Dionne Streete hit a RBI double and Snipes hit a run-scoring single to give Carolina the win. Theresa Nicholas also hit her first home run of her collegiate career in the second inning to help the Tar Heels to victory. With the win, UNC advanced to bracket play, where they played Western Kentucky in the first round.
Snipes singled in the first inning and then advanced all the way home after two Western Kentucky wild pitches to make the score 1-0. UNC scored two more in the fourth inning as Young and Emily Price scored after each singled. The game was called due to rain in the fifth inning and play was continued Sunday morning where UNC scored two more runs to win 5-1.
Against Nicholls State, The Tar Heels could manage just three hits against Nicholls State's ace pitcher Dione Meier, as they fell 5-0. Jessica Young was named to the All-Tournament team after she hit .529, two home runs, seven RBI's and had a .941 slugging percentage for the tournament.
Higgins, Snipes, Price and Jessica Graziano also had strong hitting performances in the tourney. Higgins went 9-18 with two doubles and three runs in the six games, while Snipes went 10-22 with five runs and two stolen bases. Price had a team-high seven runs and hit .350 with a home run and five RBI's for the tournament. Graziano started at the designated player position and went 8-18 with four RBI's.
Carolina improves to 26-14 on the season and next faces Coastal Carolina on March 27 in Conway, S.C.
