UNC Wins Three, Advances to Buzz Classic Quarterfinals

Marietta, Ga. - The North Carolina softball team won all three of its games on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2004 Buzz Classic. UNC defeated Middle Tennessee State 10-9, Troy State 5-4 in nine innings and then beat Western Kentucky 3-0 in five innings due to rain. Jessica Young powered the Tar Heels in the win over Middle Tennesse State as she went 3-4 with four RBI's and a home run. Natashalyn Snipes hit the game-winning single as she knocked in Joslin Higgins to break the 9-9 tie.
The Tar Heels scored two runs in the ninth inning to overcome Troy State in the second game of the day as UNC won 5-4. Dionne Streete hit a RBI double and Snipes hit a run-scoring single to give Carolina the win. With the win, UNC advanced to bracket play, where they played Western Kentucky in the first round.
Snipes singled in the first inning and then advanced all the way home after two WKU wild pitches to make the score 1-0. UNC scored two more in the fourth inning as Young and Emily Price scored after each singled. The game was called due to rain in the fifth inning and UNC picked up the win to move to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Carolina improves to 26-13 on the season as they are amidst a season-high ten-game winning streak. The Tar Heels face Nicholls State at 9 a.m. on Sunday and if they advance will play at 11 a.m. in the semifinals and at 1 p.m. for the Championship Game.
