Tar Heels Sweep First Day of Buzz Classic

Marietta, Ga. - North Carolina swept its first day at the 2004 Buzz Classic in Marietta, Ga. as the Tar Heels defeated Georgia Southern 6-1 and beat Ball State 8-0 in five innings. The Tar Heels hit three home runs against Georgia Southern and used a six-run fourth inning to put away Ball State in five innings via the mercy rule. The Tar Heels improve to 23-13 and face Middle Tennessee State and Troy State tomorrow in pool play.
Against Georgia Southern Emily Price, Dionne Streete and Jessica Young all hit home runs as the Tar Heels hit three long balls for the first time this season. Streete started the scoring off in the third inning as she hit a solo home run to make the score 1-0. After a walk to Young, Price hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. Jessica Graziano and Anna Evans followed with singles and Graziano scored after Julia Bove reached on an error.
Young finished off the scoring in the sixth inning as she belted a two-run home run, scoring Natashalyn Snipes to make it 6-0. Georgia Southern got on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1, but UNC pitcher Crystal Cox kept up her strong performance to shut Georgia Southern down. Cox pitched a complete game, allowing one run on just four hits and striking out eight.
In the 8-0 win over Ball State, Price continued her offensive onslaught as she went 2-2 with two runs scored and three RBI's. In the third inning Snipes led off with an infield single and Price singled her in after a sacrifice by Young. Theresa Nicholas walked to move price to second base and Graziano followed with a long fly ball that just missed being a home run, as Ball State's left fielder Mandy Snyder caught the ball crashing into the fence. Price tagged up and scored all the way from second base to make the score 2-0.
UNC broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Evans led it off with a single and Marissa May followed with a single of her own. Streete loaded the bases after she was hit by a pitch and two batters later, Young was also hit by a pitch as it drove in Evans. Price hit a two-run single to left field to make the score 5-0 and Nicholas followed with a two-run double to center field. Joslin Higgins made it 8-0 with a single that drove in pinch runner Julia Bove.
UNC takes on Middle Tennessee State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and plays Troy State at 5 p.m. later in the day. After that, the Tar Heels start bracket play. The top four teams in pool play will get a bye in the first round, while the five through 12 seeds will play Saturday night at 8 p.m.
