
No. 52 UNC Men's Tennis Drops First Match Of Season As No. 12 VCU Wins 5-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill men's tennis team, ranked 52nd nationally, lost its first dual match of the season to No. 12 Virginia Commonwealth 5-2 on Sunday at the Cone-Kenefield Tennis Center.
The Rams took the doubles point after winning the two and three seed matches. UNC senior Nicholas Monroe and junior Geoff Boyd handedly won the No. 1 match 8-1 over VCU's Arnaud LeCloerec and Florian Marquardt. However, UNC's two and three seeds lost 8-5 and 8-3, respectively.
In singles play, UNC's two wins came from Monroe at the No. 1 seed and Boyd at the No. 6 spot. Monroe, ranked 23rd nationally, was ahead 4-3 in the first set when LeCloerec went down with an injury. Boyd beat Daniel Lohff of VCU 7-6(3), 6-2.
Sergi Arumi of VCU clinched the match for the Rams with his 4th-seed win over UNC sophomore Raian Luchici 7-6(6), 6-3.
The Tar Heels (7-1) are in action next on Sunday, February 29, in a home doubleheader. UNC will take on Georgetown at 1 p.m. and North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m., both at the Cone-Kenefield Tennis Center.
