CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's tennis team ran its record to 5-0 on the spring season as the Tar Heels defeated Charlotte 6-1 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon. UNC was led by senior Andy Metzler, a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Darian Host at No. 4 singles, who won his ninth successive singles match dating back to the 2004 ACC Indoor Championships last month.
Carolina, which will play at No. 14 Georgia on Saturday, quickly got off to a 1-0 lead in the match as the Tar Heels swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Coach Sam Paul's team went on to win five singles matches in straight sets with senior Nick Monroe, ranked No. 23 nationally in singles, scoring a 6-1, 6-3 win over Charlotte's top seed, Arturo Aguirre.
Charlotte earned its point at No. 2 singles as Marlo Santoso of the 49ers and UNC's Derek Porter split the first two sets before Santoso beat Porter 10-6 in a tiebreaker in lieu of playing a third set.
The 49ers fell to 2-4 on the season. They will play at The Citadel Saturday.
