
Duke Edges Tar Heels 4-3, Moves Up In Carlyle Cup Competition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- - In its last home match of the regular season, the UNC men's tennis team lost a heartbreaker to its crosstown rivals, the Duke Blue Devils, falling 4-3.
With the win, Duke earned three points in the 2002-2003 Carlyle Cup Competition. The updated score is now Duke 21.5 and UNC 15.5 The competition includes all sports played between UNC and Duke and is sponsored by Carlyle and Company Jewelers.
For the second year in a row, the match was decided in the third set at #6 singles, with Duke's Peter Shults clinching the match both years. Duke has now won 57 straight regular season ACC matches.
Despite the loss, UNC came away with three huge wins. Playing at the No.1 seed and ranked #86, Nicholas Monroe upset #30 Phillip King, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, in a hard-fought battle between two juniors. "Nick is such a hard worker," said Head Coach Sam Paul. "He has grown so much since his freshman year."
Senior Trystan Meniane (#31), playing at the No. 2 spot, also came away with a victory over Duke's Michael Yani (#34), 7-6(7), 6-3. Meniane and Monroe have been impressive at the top two singles positions, combining for a 24-10 record.
Duke swept the doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Andy Metzler and sophomore Daniel Pinchbeck played a close doubles match, but fell to Shults/Stokke (#48), 9-8. But Metzler went on to beat a tough Jonathan Stokke, 6-4, 7-5, in an exciting, energized match.
The Tar Heels kept it close against a strong, #9 ranked Duke team. "[Duke] played better than we did in doubles," said Paul. "But our guys fought today. They give me heart everytime they step on the court."
This was the final home game ever for two seniors, Meniane and, doubles great, Greg Archer.
"Those two guys have been with us for a lot of success, " said Paul. "We're going to miss them a lot."
UNC's record is now 8-10 (1-5 in ACC play). Duke moves to 16-5 (8-0 in ACC play). The Tar Heels next play at Maryland on Friday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m.
