Tar Heels Down Lipscomb 3-2 To Finish Runner-up At Buzz Classic

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The University of North Carolina softball team won its 12th straight in dramatic fashion over Lipscomb as junior Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) homered in the seventh to give the Tar Heels a 3-2 win. UNC finished second at the Buzz Classic behind No. 17 Florida State falling on the second tiebreaker. Both teams ended the tourney with 4-0 records. Carolina improves to 22-13 overall, while Lipscomb falls to 12-11.
Senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) got the Tar Heels started in the top of the first inning with a bunt single and stole second base. Tolleson moved over to third on a ground ball to second base and freshman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) delivered with a two-out home run to center field to give UNC a 2-0 lead.
Lipscomb put a runner on first base on an UNC error in the fifth inning but the Tar Heels turned a nice double play to turn the Lady Bisons away and head to the sixth leading by two.
Lipscomb scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on two hits and one Tar Heel error to tie the game at two heading into the seventh.
Price's seventh inning home run was her second game-winning bomb of the season to lift UNC over the Lady Bisons by a 3-2 score.
Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) picked up the win for UNC in relief, throwing 1.1 innings to improve to 13-6. Freshman Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs and struck out one.
Carolina scored three runs, on four hits and two errors, while Lipscomb scored two runs, on four hits and one error.
North Carolina will travel to Greensboro, N.C. for a single game with NC A&T on Tuesday, March 25 at 3 p.m. The Tar Heels will then host Appalachian State for a doubleheader at the UNC Softball Complex on Thursday, March 27. The games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
