CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team defeated the Charlotte 49ers, 6-1, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, Saturday afternoon.
"We played well, " said head coach, Sam Paul. "It was a hard fought victory. This was a more experienced team than we are that we played today."
The Tar Heels (5-2) swept all three doubles matches against Charlotte (1-5) before winning five of the six singles matches. Sophomore Nicholas Monroe clinched the victory for Carolina with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Joakim Peterson at the #3 singles position.
UNC's lone senior, Marcio Petrone, won his fifth consecutive match of the season with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ola Jonsson. The Bairro, Meireles, Brazil native will look to continue his recent success Sunday afternoon, March 3, when he leads the Tar Heels against a tough #34 Rice team.
"I think we let some sets slip away (against Charlotte), " said Paul. "We can handle those things a little bit better and we'll hopefully try to improve on that tomorrow."
The Tar Heels will conclude their weekend homestand with a match against Rice Sunday afternoon. The match will take place in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and will begin at 4 p.m.
