BOCA RATON, Fla.--Florida Atlantic swept North Carolina in a softball doubleheader Thursday evening, winning the first game 2-1 and the second 7-1. The Tar Heels fell to 12-13 on the season at the end of a week of action in Florida. The host Owls, who also beat UNC at last weekend's Speedline Classic in Plant City, improved to 30-5.
In the first game, Carolina scored its only run in the top of the seventh. Natalie Anter led off the inning with a single and Natashalyn Snipes entered the game as a pinch runner. Kelly Ramsey, who had two of UNC's eight hits on the night, doubled to score Snipes and get on the board.
Freshman Erica Ennis started and took the loss for UNC after giving up a run on two hits in the first inning. Senior Shannon Walsh threw five innings in relief and gave up Florida Atlantic's other run, a third-inning homer by Nikki Myers.
In the second game, the Owls exploded for four first-inning runs on three hits against UNC starter Ashley Allen. Ennis relieved Allen six batters into the game and pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up three more runs. Carolina did its only scoring in the top of the fourth, when senior Rosie Gustavson reached on a single, advanced two bases on errors and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ramsey.
The Tar Heels return to action next Thursday with a doubleheader at Furman. After that, Carolina heads for its next tournament, the Buzz Classic in Marietta, Ga.
