UNC Softball Falls In Florida

The University of North Carolina softball team opened its 2002 season on Friday with a pair of losses at the Gator Classic in Gainesville, Fla. UNC fell 2-0 to South Florida and 10-0 in five innings to host Florida.
In the opener, USF scored runs in the third and fifth innings against Carolina starter Shannon Walsh, who gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out two. The Tar Heels had just two hits, singles by senior catcher Natalie Anter and freshman designated player Jessica Young.
In UNC's second game of the day, a pair of Florida pitchers combined for a no-hitter. The Gators scored a run in the first, two in the second, five in the third and two in the fifth to end the game after five innings. Freshman Ashley Allen started on the mound for the Tar Heels and pitched two and two-thirds innings. She gave up eight hits, seven runs (five earned) and a walk and struck out one batter. Erica Ennis, also a freshman, relieved her in the third and finished out the game, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. She struck out three batters and walked two.
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday at noon with a game against Florida International in the four-team tournament. UNC will play its second game of the day at either 5 or 7:30 p.m., with the time and opponent depending on the day's results. The tournament's consolation game is scheduled for Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and the championship game is at 1 p.m.
