October 5, 2002 | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team battled into a second overtime period to defeat Duke 5-4 Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. Senior Meredith Keller's goal in the 97th minute of play gave No. 7 UNC a 2-1 mark in ACC competition, 7-4 overall. No. 12 Duke is now 7-4 overall, 0-2 in ACC play.
"This wasn't pretty, but we gutted it out," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I compliment Duke - it took everything we had to gain this win. This was an exciting game between two great schools with a historic rivalry."
With the win, UNC earned 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup race, the annual all-sports competition between Duke and Carolina.
The game was North Carolina's third overtime contest of the season, and the Tar Heels are now 2-1 in extra-period games. It was the first UNC-Duke game to go past regulation since Nov. 4, 1990, when UNC won 2-1 in the first overtime.
The teams traded goals in the first half at Williams Field, with UNC scoring first. In the 19th minute of play, freshman Karen Mann passed to sophomore Kelsey Keeran inside the circle, and Keeran's shot put UNC up 1-0. Duke tied the score in the 23rd minute when Johanna Bischof got a penalty stroke past UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran. Carolina took a 2-1 lead into halftime after junior Alison Stewart put in a rebound off Duke goalkeeper Erica Perrier's save on a UNC penalty corner in the 29th minute. Stewart's goal was her first as a Tar Heel.
Duke tied the score at 2-2 in the 45th minute of play when Kim Gogola scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Suzanne Simpson and Bischof. The Tar Heels edged ahead again a penalty stroke by Keller in the 48th minute.
The Blue Devils then scored two quick goals to tie and take the lead. In the 62nd minute, Lindsay Shaw scored from the field on an assist from Chrissy Ashley. In the 63rd minute, Stacey Tsougas gave Duke the lead off an assist by Simpson.
Carolina forced overtime with a penalty corner in the 67th minute. Freshman Naomi Weatherald scored the first goal of her collegiate career on a straight shot, assisted by Keller and Stewart.
In the first 15-minute overtime, each team managed two shots and drew one corner. In the second overtime, Duke had three penalty corners to none by UNC. With just over three minute remaining in the period, after which the game would have gone to penalty strokes, Carolina sophomore Kerry Falgowski fed a pass to Keller, who shot from 12 yards out for the win.
For the game, Duke led 16-15 in shots (12-11 in regulation) and 13-6 in penalty corners (9-5 in regulation). Tran had six saves while Perrier made eight.
UNC returns to action on Sunday, hosting Kent State at 1 p.m.
