CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The top-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team fell Saturday for the first time this season, 5-4 in overtime to 18th-ranked Kent State (3-3). UNC (5-1) returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m when No. 20 James Madison visits Francis E. Henry Stadium.
"I congratulate Kent State," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They beat us in every phase of the game. I hope my team will respond to the loss with a great effort tomorrow."
Saturday at Henry Stadium, neither team could get on the board until the first period was more than halfway over. With 11:51 to play in the first half, senior forward Abbey Woolley reverse-sticked a shot into the goal to put UNC up 1-0. Woolley was assisted by freshman Kelsey Keeran. Kent State's Kristen Johnson scored 4:29 before halftime to tie the game at 1-1.
The scoring came fast and furious in the second half as the teams traded goals. Kent State took the lead three minutes into the period on a second goal by Johnson. Carolina came back to tie the game at 2-2 four minutes later with a goal by senior Carrie Lingo, who scored on the rebound of a shot by Woolley.
Lauren Grandinetti scored with 24:41 to play to give the Golden Flashes the lead again, 3-2. Lingo then tied the score with her second goal of the game, tipping in a penalty corner shot by senior Abby Martin.
Kent State pulled ahead with 14:42 on the clock on a goal by Arlette van Cleeff, assisted by Helen Jerdan. Carolina tied the game at 4-4 with just under five minutes on the clock on another penalty corner goal, this one by freshman Carey Fetting-Smith, assisted by Martin. The goal was the first of Fetting-Smith's career.
The overtime period was UNC's first of the season, but the third in six games for the Golden Flashes, who were coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Ohio on Thursday. Just over three minutes into the seven-on-seven, sudden-death period, KSU drew a penalty corner and capitalized on it for the first time all afternoon. Jerdan's shot, assisted by Rebecca Rahaim and Kristen Clayton, won the game for the visitors.
"I was pleased with the team for battling back and forcing the overtime, but we weren't able to put it away," Shelton said. "That was due to good execution by Kent State."
UNC had won both its previous meetings with the Golden Flashes, including a 5-3 first-round NCAA Tournament victory last November.
