Evansville Sweeps UNC In Softball Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The visiting Evansville Purple Aces won a pair of games Wednesday against North Carolina, 1-0 and 3-2 at Finley Field. Evansville improved to 10-4 on the season with the victories, while Carolina fell to 13-5-1.
In Game 1 of the doubleheader, Evansville scored the only run in the top of the fourth inning. Left fielder Emily Winters reached on a single and scored three batters later on Bridget Broerman's single to center. Maggie Ross earned the win for the Aces, giving up five hits and striking out four to improve to 3-2. Radara McHugh (7-4) gave up six hits and struck out seven in the loss.
In Game 2, Evansville got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Haven Shank led off the game with a walk, advanced on Winters' single and scored on a single by Jessica Huff. Winters scored on a single by Nicole Chatman.
Winters scored her third run of the day in the top of the third to put the Purple Aces up 3-0. After reaching on a walk, she stole second, advanced to third on a single by Huff and scored on an RBI groundout by Jamie Davison.
Carolina mounted a challenge in the bottom of the seventh with its first runs of the afternoon. With Natalie Anter on first after a single, Kelly Ramsey homered over the centerfield fence to draw the Tar Heels within a run. After Beth Olen singled to left, Ross relieved starting pitcher Joni Woods. Carolina loaded the bases with one out, but wasn't able to bring in the tying run.
Woods earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Ross picked up her first save of the year. UNC starter Michael Parrott (6-1) gave up four hits and struck out seven in taking her first loss of the season.
North Carolina has now lost three games in a row. Each of the Tar Heels' five losses this season has come by a single run.
UNC will take to the road during next week's Spring Break, playing in the Worth/Oklahoma Classic in Norman, Okla., March 9-11 and in the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., March 14-18.
