CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina softball team opened its Atlantic Coast Conference season Saturday with one game that lasted longer than expected and one that didn't last quite long enough.
In first game of the afternoon doubleheader at Finley Field, the Tar Heels defeated visiting Virginia 2-1 in nine innings. The second game was halted by rain and darkness after six innings with no score. The teams are working to schedule a time to resume the game.
In Game 1, the Tar Heels got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when catcher Natalie Anter hit a two-out double to center, scoring right fielder Rosie Gustavson, who had reached on a bunt single.
Virginia tied the score in the top of the sixth when center fielder Kelly McCabe came in from second on an RBI single by pitcher Kristen Dennis.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, UNC loaded the bases with one out on a single by Anter, a double by left fielder Emily Price and a fielder's choice. Designated player Carrie Bates hit a grounder to third and Price scored on the error to end the game with the bases loaded and one out.
UNC improved to 22-13-1 on the season, 1-0 in the conference. Virginia is 30-9 (0-1) and snapped an 11-game winning streak.
In the second game, neither team had scored through six innings of play before the rain, intermittent throughout the afternoon, became heavy. The game was halted before the seventh inning began and will be resumed at a yet-to-be-determined date.
