Tar Heels Fall To FSU In Softball

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Visiting Florida State swept a doubleheader against the North Carolina softball team Friday at Finley Field, shutting out the Tar Heels 2-0 in the first game and 5-0 in the second. Florida State, ranked 17th in the nation, improved to 37-6 on the season, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina is now 22-15-1, 1-2 in the ACC.
Both teams will participate in the Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Finley Field. FSU opens play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Florida Atlantic then takes on East Carolina at noon. UNC plays Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m
In the first game Friday, Tar Heel senior Radara McHugh had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning, when FSU scored two runs on two hits, RBI singles by Brandi Stuart and Jen White-Stokes. The Tar Heels totaled three hits and left eight runners on base in their first conference loss. Leslie Malerich earned the win, striking out three, while McHugh struck out seven and took the loss.
In the second game, the Seminoles jumped out in front in the second inning on an RBI single by Staci Brandon. They put the game away in the fifth inning with six hits, including a two-RBI double to left by Kimmy Carter. UNC totaled five hits, with Rosie Gustavson and Beth Olen both going 2-for-3.
White-Stokes struck out three en route to the shutout win. Michael Parrott took the loss, pitching 4 2/3 innings before she was relieved by McHugh.
